We're continuing to see a steady improvement in the source water from the Goulburn River after the recent storm activity saw blackwater enter the river. If you were experiencing taste and odour issues, it should be improving and water supply should return to normal by the weekend. We've increased our water quality surveillance in response to the pulse of blackwater to improve the taste and odour in the drinking water.

If you continue to experience any issues with your water supply, please contact our 24/7 Customer Service Centre on 1800 454 500.

Blackwater affecting source water supply for Shepparton area

Recent storm events have resulted in a large volume of blackwater entering into the Goulburn River, the source water supply for Shepparton, Mooroopna, Congupna, Kialla, Toolamba, Ardmona, Tallygaroopna, Orrvale and Lemnos.

Some customers may experience taste and odour issues with their treated water supply. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but expect that water quality will improve over the next couple of days.

Some people have reported that putting water in an open jug in the fridge can help with taste and odour issues.

We will keep you updated on the situation. For further advice or information or your treated water doesn’t improve contact 1800 454 500.

Blackwater occurs naturally when floods wash leaves, grass and other organic material off riverbanks and floodplains into waterways. The affected water appears darker, often similar to the colour of black tea. High levels of organic matter in waterways, combined with warm weather, can cause oxygen levels in the water to drop, making it harder to treat for drinking.

Planned works and coronavirus (COVID-19)

Our staff are working to continue to provide essential water and wastewater services and our critical maintenance and repair programs are still underway. This ensures our services can continue to run smoothly and reduces the chances or bursts or leaks.

We’re taking a number of precautions – including social distancing and additional safety measures – to ensure the safety of our staff, their families and our customers while we work.

Generally works will be carried out on the street, not on your property but if you have any concerns, please contact us on 1800 454 500 at any time. We ask that you don’t approach our staff or contractors while they’re working, as they’re following social distancing guidelines to help keep everyone safe.

We try to keep any interruption to the water supply as short as possible, however we encourage you to make sure you have enough water stored to wash your hands frequently and for 20 seconds, or ensure you have sanitiser available.
