UPDATE 12 May 2020

Maintenance and Upgrade Works at Tatura Water Treatment Plant complete

The works to desludge the lagoons at the Water Treatment Plant in Tatura have been completed, and any odour emitted via this process is no longer expected to be an issue. Thanks to customers in the vicinity of the plant for their patience throughout these maintenance works.

In addition to the completion of the desludging, the Water Treatment Plant upgrade project is now at commissioning stage. It is expected that GVW will be sending water to customers from the new WTP by early June.

Construction of an additional WTP, control building and chemical dosing facility will increase the plant’s delivery capacity from 12ML per day to 18ML per day and meet future demand as the town grows.

The project included construction of a Dissolved Air Flotation and Filtration [DAFF] plant and a larger chemical dosing and storage facility to accommodate additional chlorine for disinfection.

Apologies to any customers who were impacted by any elements of GVW’s work at the site, we sincerely thank customers for their continued patience.

Second lagoon desludging job underway

The works referred to below to desludge the lagoons at the Tatura Water Treatment Plant continue today.

An earlier attempt was made late in 2019 to desludge the two lagoons at the facility on Ross St, but the work was deferred due to the odour caused by the process at the time.

This time around the lagoons are being desludged 'wet' instead. While this process also emits odour, the impacts on customers should last for a shorter duration.

Apologies to those who are impacted by the odour, we sincerely thank customers for their patience regarding these works.

Customers are encouraged to provide feedback on this project or GVW services on 1800 45 45 00.

Minor roadworks in front of Tatura Water Treatment Plant week prior to Easter

In addition to the maintenance work underway on the lagoons at the Tatura Water Treatment Plant, works to upgrade the water treatment infrastructure have been ongoing for some time.

As Goulburn Valley Water (GVW) nears completion on this project customers are advised that the curb and channel will be replaced along Ross Street along the front of the both the old and the new water treatment plant sites. These works will require traffic management along Ross Street to slow the traffic in this area.

It is expected that the works will begin on Monday 6th April and be completed shortly after the Easter weekend.

GVW is also planning to changeover power supplies on Tuesday 7th April, however this is not expected to impact customers.

Apologies to those who are impacted by any elements of GVW’s work at the site, we sincerely thank customers for their continued patience.

Customers are encouraged to provide feedback on this project or GVW services on 1800 45 45 00.

Odour due to works at Tatura Water Treatment Plant

Works are continuing at the Goulburn Valley Water site on Ross St Tatura.

The two lagoons on the site will be desludged over coming weeks, a process which is expected to cause some odour due to the disturbance of the wet sludge. The lagoons are being desludged 'wet' due to the odour the drying out process was causing late in 2019. While this process also does emit odour it should last for a shorter duration.

This work will be done in two stages, with desludging of one lagoon taking place over this week and next week, and the second lagoon scheduled for 2-3 weeks after that.

Apologies to those who are impacted by the odour, we sincerely thank customers for their patience regarding these works.

Customers are encouraged to provide feedback on this project or GVW services on 1800 45 45 00.

Upgrade Works

Works to expand the water treatment plant at the Goulburn Valley Water site on Ross St Tatura have been taking place over the last 12 months.

Construction of an additional water treatment plant, control building and chemical dosing facility will increase the plant’s delivery capacity from 12ML per day to 18ML per day and meet future demand as the town grows.

The project includes construction of a Dissolved Air Flotation and Filtration [DAFF] plant and a larger chemical dosing and storage facility to accommodate additional chlorine for disinfection.

The $8 million project is being delivered by Laurie Curran Water and is expected to be commissioned in April 2020.

Customers with an interest in viewing this plant and the site once the upgrade is completed are welcome to contact Kristy on education@gvwater.vic.gov.au; (ph) 5832 4869 to register their interest.

The Tatura WTP upgrade will be commissioned by April 2020

Annual maintenance

In parallel with the water treatment plant upgrade, significant maintenance works have also been taking place at the Tatura WTP over several months, with works including desludging of the two earthen storages on the site. The earthen storages contain the dirt and algae removed from the water during the treatment process.

Work to desludge the first of the two storages was completed successfully in April this year. Desludging involves draining the lagoon, drying out the sludge beds and carting the sludge to a neighbouring GVW facility.

Draining of the second earthen storage was recently creating some odour due to a blockage underneath the storage itself, impeding the draining process and made worse by the smell of drying algae remnant from last summer– this was creating a smell similar to rotting vegetation and resulted in some customer complaints. We do apologise for the odour issue, it is something we were not expecting as part of such a routine process and it did take some time to identify the cause.

Now that we understand the reasons for this, the odour situation has been addressed by applying lime and refilling the storage. The blockage issue is expected to rectify itself during the next desludging process, which will take place in 2020.

It is expected that all odour related to this year’s desludging process should have dissipated within a few weeks, with the maintenance project now in its final stages.

Maintenance works are nearing completion at the Tatura WTP

We thank customers for their patience with these works.
