Our fish

The two reservoirs at Dunyak Moira are home to two species of native fish - Murray cod and Golden Perch, also known as yellowbellies.

The fish have been relocated from channels and lakes in the region in partnership with Victorian Fisheries Authority and they range in size - there's even a couple of Murray cod over a metre in length if you want to try your luck in landing a monster-sized fish!

To help protect our fish, this is a catch-and-release only site - this will help us protect our fish for many generations of visitors to enjoy. If you catch other non-native fish like carp, please do not return them to the water.

Some tips to help reduce stress on the fish:

  • Limit the amount of time they are out of the water. Fish can’t breathe out of water, so be prepared to quickly remove hooks gently, take a photo and place the fish back
  • Have a soft, knotless net ready to help you land the fish
  • Use long-nosed pliers to remove hooks gently
  • If you need to put the fish down, make sure there’s a space with no sharp objects or anything that will damage skin
  • If you catch a large fish, be sure to support it properly - there's tips to better handle Murray cod here

You can find more information on safely handling fish at the Victorian Fisheries Authority's website.
