KEY THEME 4: MEANINGFUL ENVIRONMENTAL AND RECREATIONAL OUTCOMES
4A) REDUCTION OF CARBON EMISSIONS IN LINE WITH COMMUNITY PREFERENCE - THROUGH AN EXTENDED TARGET OF 30%
About this project
Our business activities create carbon emissions from two main sources - the use of electricity in transporting and treating water and wastewater, and, direct emissions from the treatment of wastewater. Under the Statement of Obligations (Emissions Reduction) we have an obligation to reduce carbon emissions by 19% by 2025.
Customers told us that they support this intitative and further, endorsed a more ambitions target of 30% by 2025, based on a willingness-to-pay analysis of future bill impacts.
What we have done so far
Since making the pledge, we have recalculated our emissions and now know that they are significantly higher than previously estimated. We remain however, fully commiteed to the emission reduction target we set and a 30% reduction is our business as usual target.
We are installing solar panels at many of our sites and replacing assets at their end of life with new energy efficient technologies. We are working hard to identify other reduction initiatives to help us achieve the target and develop a revised action plan.
We have established a Carbon Customer Advisory Group to help us consider future intiaitives from a customer perspective and will continue to work with this group throughout the price plan.
