A former Goulburn Valley Water staff member has been recognised for his work in inspiring and nurturing the next generation of leaders within the organisation.
Neville Whittaker was recently awarded Leading Teams’ Special Recognition Award to acknowledge his work in creating and developing a high-performance culture within his team and the wider business.
Mr Whittaker retired from Goulburn Valley Water in April after 43 years’ service, most recently working as the organisation’s Central Operations District Manager in Shepparton.
The Leading Teams High Performance Awards are held biennially to recognise teams and individuals who are committed to improving the dynamics in their teams or organisations.
Mr Whittaker was chosen for the award as a result of his drive, energy and passion for his team and its development. He met Leading Teams’ co-founder Ray McLean through football and has been proactive in establishing a partnership between Leading Teams and Goulburn Valley Water.
“Nev has been driven for 43 years by the passion to make sure that everyone in the Goulburn Valley region got really good quality water to their house,” Mr McLean said.
Mr Whittaker introduced Leading Teams to GVW in 2008 and the program is now used widely throughout the organisation, with several High Performance Leadership Programs run annually.
Leading Teams’ Facilitator Simon Armstrong said Neville models the behaviours he wants from his team, he rewards them when he sees them from others and he challenges when he doesn’t see them or he sees something else.
“Neville is a fine model of leadership by anyone’s standards,” he said.
GVW Manager Operations Steven Nash said Neville was committed to culture and leadership development.
“Neville’s work with Leading Teams has helped our organisation develop better relationships, improve productivity and created a culture of striving for excellence,” he said.
Goulburn Valley Water’s Operations & Maintenance Department was also nominated as a finalist in the team award category.
Leading Teams works with organisations to develop high performance leaders and teams, and implement sustainable programs of change in the areas of leadership, teamwork and culture development.
