Goulburn Valley Water’s “Renewables Program” is underway as of this week, with works to install solar panels commencing at the Wastewater Management Facility (WMF) in Shepparton.
With 16 GVW sites on the program, customers may notice works to install both ground mounted and roof mounted panels at a number of GVW facilities across Shepparton over coming months.
Sites include on the roof of water storage tanks at the Water Treatment Plant in Welsford St, and GVW's Florence St Operations Centre where nearly 300 ground mounted panels will be installed.
Installation works will also be taking place at the Regional Administration Office in Fryers St, and at two rural facilities in North Shepparton; a Sewer Pump station site on Wanganui Rd, and the Wastewater Management Facility (WMF) where contractors are setting up this week.
General Manager Planning & Assets, Daniel Hughes, said the panels are part of a large scale project to install over 4,800 high-efficiency solar PV panels on GVW land and infrastructure.
"The Shepparton WMF is the first of a number of sites across the GVW region to have the panels installed, with works also scheduled for Tongala, Rushworth and Cobram in the most immediate early stages."
"This project is intended to reduce both greenhouse gas emissions, and operating costs associated with energy bills," he said.
"We expect it to deliver multiple benefits to GVW, our customers and the environment."
In an effort to neutralise energy consumption across a number of sites, each of the selected facilities will be home to enough solar panels to produce the equivalent amount of energy required to run that site. It is expected that eventually the operation of these sites will be optimised such that they predominantly function in sunlight hours.
Works to install the panels will be visible in some areas, with the structures as high as 3m from the base, and some rural installations with sections over 50m in length – any customers expected to be directly impacted regarding noise, dust or road closures will be contacted.
GVW thanks the Shepparton community in advance for their patience over the duration of this project. Customers are encouraged to provide feedback on this project or GVW's services on 1800 45 45 00.
