Water Conservation

A precious resource

Water is the most precious resource we have, yet we often take it for granted. We use water in almost everything we do—for drinking, washing, cooking and growing things, to sport and recreation.

Of the water used in the Goulburn Basin region approximately 1.7% is used by urban communities.

Of the water used in Goulburn Valley Water’s region, approximately 45% is used by our residential customers.

In 2004/05, the average household had 2.48 people.  Of the water used in Goulburn Valley Water’s region, approximately 39% (southern towns) to 54% (Northern Towns) is used outside the home.

The graphs below show the average water usage per person per day in each section of the home for our Northern Towns and Southern Towns.

Northern Towns include; Barmah, Cobram, Colbinabbin, Congupna, Corop, Dookie, Girgarre, Goulburn Weir, Katamatite, Katandra West, Katunga, Kirwan's Bridge, Kyabram, Longwood, Mansfield, Merrigum, Mooroopna, Murchison, Nagambie, Nathalia, Numurkah, Picola, Rushworth, Shepparton, Stanhope, Strathmerton, Tallygaroopna, Tatura, Tongala, Toolamba, Wunghnu and Yarroweyah.

Southern Towns include; Alexandra, Avenel, Broadford, Bonnie Doon, Buxton, Clonbinane (Waterford Park), Eildon, Euroa, Kilmore, Mangalore, Mansfield, Marysville, Merrijig, Molesworth, Pyalong, Sawmill Settlement, Seymour, Strathbogie, Tallarook, Thornton, Violet Town, Wandong-Heathcote Junction, Woods Point,  and Yea

(Note that the volumes used for in-house consumption are based on studies undertaken by Yarra Valley Water.  As Goulburn Valley Water has not completed similar investigations, the Yarra Valley Water information has been adopted as the best currently available.)

As Australia’s population grows we will use increasing amounts of our most precious resource – water. It is a renewable resource but we need to use it wisely. Some simple changes at home will make a big difference to the amount of water you use.

Each Australian can help save the country literally millions of dollars each year by simply reducing the amount of water they use each day. And it can all be done without affecting our lifestyle.

Water conservation our responsibility all year round
