New Water Treatment Plant at Sawmill Settlement

15 July 2009

A new $2.4 million water treatment plant at Sawmill Settlement has recently been commissioned by Goulburn Valley Water.

Goulburn Valley Water’s General Manager Technical Services, Mr Allen Gale said that the new treatment plant provides the communities of Sawmill Settlement and Merrijig with a high quality secure source of water.

“The project commenced in August 2008 and took approximately 11 months to complete,” said Mr Gale. “It involved the installation of an ultra filtration plant, a new 500 kilolitre clear water storage and a fully remote supervision and control system.”

Mr Gale said that the new plant has the capacity to produce 1,000 kilolitres of treated water each day.  “The filtration plant has been designed with two 500 kilolitre units, which means when maintenance is required we only have to shut down half the plant rather the entire plant.”

“The new clear water storage provides enough capacity, in the event of a breakdown for eight hours during the peak period,” said Mr Gale.  “The new supervision and control facility allows the plant to operate automatic with minimal attendance by our operation staff, which is ideal for a remote location such as this.”

The project was delivered under a design and construct contract by Haulton Construction.
