Earthy Taste in Seymour

9 May 2008

Seymour residents may have noticed an earthy taste to their town water supply recently.  To help eliminate this taste Goulburn Valley Water has temporally installed additional equipment at the Seymour water treatment plant.

Goulburn Valley Water’s District Manager, Mr Neil Healey, said that the water from the Goulburn River currently has a taste that could not be removed by the existing water treatment process.  “To improve the water supply to our customers we have installed a new dosing system that will allow us to add powered activated carbon to the treatment process,” he said. “We are adding carbon as it can absorb the taste creating organic substances which can then removed by the current filter system prior to the water being delivered to our customers.”

Mr Healey said that most taste problems are related to changes in the river water and there is no risk to health  “Seymour has not previously experienced taste problems and we expect that the taste issue will stop being a problem when we receive good rainfall.”

“We anticipate that for the next week our customers will still notice the earthy taste until the water within the pipe network is used and replenished by the water treated with carbon,” said Mr Healey.
