Broadford Pipeline A Step Closer

10 June 2008

The Board of Goulburn Valley Water has recently approved a number of contracts for the $15.2 million Broadford water supply pipeline.

Goulburn Valley Water’s General Manager Technical Services, Mr Allen Gale said that the Corporation has received the majority of the necessary planning approvals.  “This enabled our Board to approve the contracts for the pipeline supply, valves and fittings, pipeline constructions and pump station construction.”

“The Pipeline Supply Contract has been awarded to Tyco and involves the supply of approximately 20.3 kms of 450 dia pipe and 2.4km of 600 dia pipe.  The pipes will be supplied over the next two months and stockpiled along the route,” said Mr Gale.  Iplex has been awarded the valves and fittings supply contract. Delivery of fittings has commenced and will continue over the next two months.”

Mr Gale said that the construction of the pipeline has been awarded to DigRite Excavations.  “It is anticipated that construction of the pipeline will commence in early to mid June and be completed in November.”

“Leed Engineering and Construction has been awarded the contract for the pump station construction and it is anticipated that the construction of the pump station will commence in mid June and be completed in November.”

Mr Gale said that the timing of the contracts is dependent on weather conditions.  “If we receive a lot of winter rain then there may be some delays. Otherwise the pipeline is scheduled for completion by 1 December 2008.”

“Where possible the pipeline has been located within crown land such as rail and road reserves.  However, some sections of these reserves are heavily vegetated which will require the pipeline to be located within private property,” said Mr Gale.  “We are liaising with landowners who are impacted by this pipeline and to assist landowners the Corporation has engaged an agronomist to advise on pasture reinstatement.”

Mr Gale said that the pipeline alignment has been selected to minimise tree removal.  However, it will be necessary to remove some trees.  “We are working with DSE and will fully offset these trees at the Broadford wastewater management facility.”
