Water Supply Plans in Place

12 March 2007

Goulburn Valley Water has contingency plans in place to ensure continuing water supply to Euroa and Violet Town during extreme drought conditions.

Goulburn Valley Water’s Acting Chief Executive, Mr Peter Quinn said that the Authority has around 30 megalitres available in Waterhouse Reservoir and began trucking water into Euroa over the long weekend to supplement these reserves.

“Stage 4 water restrictions were introduced in Euroa and Violet Town on 1 February 2007, and we have a target total usage of 1.2 megalitres per day”, said Mr Quinn. Current usage is marginally above this target and residents are urged to comply with the Stage 4 rules and conserve water usage in-house where possible.

GVW has arranged to transport water into Euroa from Avenel, with around half of Euroa and Violet Town’s daily usage, i.e. 0.6 megalitres being tankered in per day. If the volume in storage falls below 25 megalitres, this amount will be increased to 1.2 megalitres per day, which is sufficient to meet the daily usage target under Stage 4 restrictions.

“These extreme dry conditions on the Seven Creeks are creating significant challenges for our operations, however Euroa and Violet Town residents should be assured that GVW has contingency plans in place to continue water supply to both towns until the catchment recovers”, said Mr Quinn
