Standpipes Staying Open

1 February 2007

Goulburn Valley Water and the Shire of Strathbogie announced today that the Standpipes in Euroa and Violet Town will remain open throughout Stage 4 water restrictions.

Goulburn Valley Water’s Chief Executive, Mr Laurie Gleeson said that the Authority and Shire have been working together to ensure that rural residents have access to water during this difficult period.  “Goulburn Valley water will be organising water tankers to deliver water from Seymour to our Euroa Water Treatment Plant,” he said. “The volume of water carted will be dependent on how much water is used each week from the standpipes”

“To enable the standpipes to remain open we need to pass on the carting costs to the users of the standpipes.  The new fee will apply from Tuesday 6th February at a cost of $15 per 1,000 litres (1 kilolitre) of water” said Mr Gleeson.

Mr Gleeson said that the Goulburn Valley Water Euroa and Violet Town Standpipes will only be accessible via registered water carters. “The water is to be used for in-house use only and is not to be used on gardens,” he said.  “If we discover that water carters’ customers are using the water for gardens then we will take appropriate action to prevent further water deliveries.”

“The Shire of Strathbogie will keep the stock and domestic standpipe in Euroa and Violet Town open, we understand that this will be manned by Shire Officers and will be available for Stock and Domestic purposes,” said Mr Gleeson.

Mr Gleeson said that low income households can get assistance for water carting costs from the Department of Human Services under the Non-Mains Water Concession program.  The carted water rebate is designed to assist low income households with the cost of carting water to fill domestic rainwater tanks.  For more information free call the Department of Human Services on Free Call 1800 658 521.
