Stage 4 Water Restrictions from 1 February for Euroa and Violet Town

25 January 2007

Goulburn Valley Water has announced that Stage 4 water restrictions will come into effect for Euroa and Violet Town Midnight Thursday 1 February 2007.

Goulburn Valley Water’s Chief Executive Mr Laurie Gleeson said that the move to stage 4 water restrictions is necessary due to water consumption continuing to be at non restriction levels.  “Over the last two weeks, the daily water consumption in Euroa & Violet Town has been over 3,000 kilolitres which is equivalent to what was being used in January 2005 & 2006 when no water restrictions were in place.”

“This current daily water consumption is more than double the Stage 3 target of 1,400 kilolitres,” said Mr Gleeson.  “The new daily target for Stage 4 is 1,200 kilolitres per day and we really need that community support in meeting this target.”

Mr Gleeson said that the storage level in the three reservoirs that supply Euroa and Violet town has dropped by 110 megalitres (110,000 kilolitres) since 4 January.  “To ensure that the remaining water in storage meets households needs until rain replenishes our water storages, it will need to be used extremely conservatively and will require the co-operation and vigilance of the whole community,“ he said.

Key features of Stage 4 Water Restrictions are as follows:

  • A private garden (including lawn) must not be watered at any time

  • A fountain or water feature must not operate or be topped up.

  • An existing pool or spa must not be topped up except by means of a watering can or bucket, filled directly from a tap (and not by means of a hose)

  • Water must not be used to clean any part of a vehicle other than its windows, mirrors and lights, and for spot-removing corrosive substances, and then only with a bucket filled directly from a tap (and not by means of a hose).

"Throughout Victoria and within our region we are experiencing a very difficult summer with high temperatures no rainfall and stream flows at historically low levels,” said Mr Gleeson.  “At the end of December 2006, there were 438 towns in Victoria on water restrictions, with 101 towns on Stage 1, 119 on Stage 2, 29 on Stage 3 and 189 on Stage 4.”

Mr Gleeson said that the Authority has sent a letter and brochure to all their customers in Euroa and Violet Town.  “The brochure outlines all requirements under Stage 4 water restrictions and also provides some helpful hints on grey water reuse.”

Please see our Water Restrictions page to download a copy of the brochure and for full details, including details of restrictions applying to sporting grounds and commercial premises, or contact our 24 hour Customer Service Centre on free call 1800 45 45 00.  Breaches of the restriction By-law should also be reported to this number.
