Stage 2 Water Restrictions now in force for towns on the Goulburn & Murray Rivers

1 May 2007

Stage 4 water restrictions come into operation for Nathalia, Numurkah, Picola and Wunghnu from Tuesday 1st May 2007.

Goulburn Valley Water, Chief Executive Mr Laurie Gleeson, said other towns on different supply systems were going onto Stage 2 or Stage 3.  “Under Stage 4 water restrictions all outside watering using the town water supply is banned..

“Stage 4 water restrictions do not restrict the use of bore water or grey water.  However, when using grey water people should follow these simple dos and don’ts, he said.

  • only use grey water from baths, showers, hand basins, laundry tubs and washing machines (preferably the final rinse water);

  • rotate the lawn and garden areas you water as watering the same spot may affect the soil and cause plants to die;

  • only apply enough water that the soil can absorb;

  • stop using grey water during wet periods, if odours are generated or if plants do not appear to be healthy;

  • don’t water vegetable gardens if the crop is to be eaten raw or uncooked and be careful when using grey water on native plants;

  • don’t store grey water;

  • don’t let children or pets drink or play with grey water;

  • make sure grey water cannot flow from your property, enter swimming pools, or enter the stormwater system;

  • choose laundry detergents with low phosphorus, sodium and nitrogen content; and

  • wash your hands following garden watering with grey water.

Mr Gleeson said that all Goulburn Valley Water customers should have received a letter, and brochure by now.  “If any customer has not received this they can contact our 24 hour customer service centre on Free Call 1800 45 45 00 and a set will be sent out to them.”
