New Recycled Water Storage Underway for Marysville

16 October 2007

Goulburn Valley Water has received the planning permit from the Murrindindi Shire to start construction of the new recycled water storage at the Corporation’s existing site and irrigation works on recently acquired land on Buxton-Marysville Road.

Goulburn Valley Water’s General Manager – Technical Services, Mr Allen Gale said that this project shows what can be achieved when the Community and the Corporation work together for the benefit of all parties.  “When the site selection process commenced in May 2003 it appeared that using the existing facility to construct the winter water storage would not be possible because of the revegetation requirements.  However, after the December 2005 community workshop which looked at the social impacts of all possible sites, it was agreed that the existing site was the most acceptable site on Triple Bottom Line principles.”

The project involves the construction of a 55 megalitre winter water storage, for highly treated recycled water, on the Corporation’s existing site. The construction of transfer pipelines to supply the Marysville Country Club and Perry’s Paddock with recycled water for irrigation.

Mr Gale said that the Corporation is currently calling for tenders for three separate contracts, which include the construction of the winter storage, construction of the two pipelines and a pipe supply contract.

“We anticipate that construction of the winter storage will commence in December 2007 and will take approximately 4 months to complete,” said Mr Gale. “The pipeline works will commence mid December to early January and will take approximately 4 or 5 months to complete.”

“Installation of the irrigation system for Perry’s Paddock will commence in January 2008 and I understand that the works at the Golf Course will be undertaken sometime after January 2008.”

Mr Gale said it has been a long process in obtaining all the necessary approvals while accommodating the needs of the community, but the outcome is an excellent solution for all involved.  “The Corporation’s and the community’s highest priority has been to ensure a secure water supply for the Marysville Country Club, which the recycled water will provide,” he said.  “Although the recycled water will not be available for irrigation of the golf course this summer the Corporation will be assisting the Marysville County Club with water over the summer until the works are commissioned.”
