Kilmore New Water Storage Progress

6 June 2007

The foundation has been completed for Goulburn Valley Water’s new $4 million water storage for Kilmore.

Goulburn Valley Water’s Chief Executive, Mr Laurie Gleeson said that the Authority’s contractor has spent eight weeks preparing the foundations for the new water storage.  “Our contractor has transported to the site and compacted 20,000 tonnes of crushed rock for the foundation,” he said. “When filled the combined weight of the structure will be in excess of 18,000 tonnes.”

“The foundation is approximately 53 metres in diameter and 3 metres deep, which is fairly deep. This is to ensure there is no differential settlement across the site once the tank is completed and filled with water,” said Mr Gleeson.

Mr Gleeson said that the Authority would like to thank the Kilmore community for their understanding of the truck movements during this phase of the project.  “Our contractors had trucks operating full time five days a week for four weeks, carting the material through Kilmore and we appreciate the community’s patience.”

“The next major activity that will take place is the pouring of the concrete tank base,” said Mr Gleeson.  “Depending on weather conditions the base will be poured towards the end of June.”

Mr Gleeson said that the new storage will be replacing the open earthen water storages at Kilmore with a new 16 million litre storage tank.  “The older storages are open to the elements and can be exposed to contamination by birds and other wildlife,” he said.  “The new tank, which is fully enclosed, will assist the Authority in providing clean safe water to our Kilmore customers.”

The older storages will remain in operation until the tank is completed and they will then be decommissioned.

The new tank is expected to be completed in November 2007.
