HW Greenham Sons Doing Great Things to Save Water 8 February 2007 There has been a lot of talk in the recent weeks about large companies being allowed to use as much water as they like during water restrictions. However, very little is heard about those companies doing great things to save water. Goulburn Valley Water would like to recognise and congratulate HW Greenham & Sons in Tongala for their world’s best practice approach to water conservation. Goulburn Valley Water’s Chief Executive Mr Laurie Gleeson said that a water use study was recently conducted at HW Greenham & Sons abattoir in Tongala. “The study found that Greenham’s is close to world’s best practice for total water consumption per tonne of meat processed,” he said. “Greenham’s used approximately 4730 litres for every tonne of meat processed.” Peter Greenham, Executive Chairman of H.W. Greenham and Sons, said today that he was delighted that a recent independent study of water use and salt generation at their Tongala abattoir had concluded that operations at the facility were very close to “World’s Best Practice.” “We have always tried to be a responsible member of the local business community and are very proud to be identified as an environmental leader within the Goulburn Valley industries” said Mr Greenham. In commenting on his company’s approach to the environment Mr Greenham said “H.W. Greenham and Sons has deliberately worked in close cooperation with Goulburn Valley Water on all environmental matters, believing that a cooperative approach produces the best result for both parties.” Mr Gleeson said that the study conducted at Greenham’s was part of an ongoing cleaner production program run by the Authority and EPA within the Goulburn Valley region. “The aim of the cleaner production program is to help large industries reduce water consumption, trade waste discharge and the amount of salt in the wastewater.” “Reducing the amount of salt in the wastewater has numerous benefits for the company, the Authority and the Environment,” said Mr Gleeson. “Benefits include cost savings for the company on products and trade waste discharge fees, less impact on wastewater infrastructure and a higher quality recycled water is produced resulting in an environmentally sustainable product that can be used for irrigation.” “The study has also helped Greenham’s identify additional ways of reducing their water consumption and wastewater flows.”
