Contingency Plans Tested for Future Need

30 July 2007

Goulburn Valley Water has recently completed testing of a contingency plan to supply water to Kilmore from the Wallan system in the event that severe drought conditions continue.

Goulburn Valley Water’s Managing Director Mr Laurie Gleeson said that the Corporation is continually looking at ways of improving its drought response plan.  “The carting of water is very expensive and as an alternative we have put measures in place to supply Kilmore with water from the Wallan system.”

“Over the past few days our staff have been testing a high lift pump that has been installed on the South Mountain Rd pipeline that was formerly used to supply Wallan with water from the Sunday Creek System,” said Mr Gleeson.  “The pump is designed to supply one megalitre per day to the Kilmore system, or about 60% of the current restricted demand.”

Mr Gleeson said that test has confirmed that the pump is working satisfactorily and will be available if and when required.  “This is a temporary emergency measure only and will be used only if severe drought conditions continue.”
